Congratulations to Year 10 pupils who, when they were in Year 9, completed all the assessments for FCSE (Foundation Certificate of Secondary Education) in French. The scores have been agreed by the Exam Board and certificates will be presented for the level achieved, Distinction (48 pupils), Merit (19 pupils), Pass (21 pupils).
They are the first year group to have the opportunity to gain this qualification, which recognises achievement in French at the end of Key Stage 3. Pupils are assessed in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The Albany French teachers are pleased with the way the pupils rose to the challenge and managed to complete all three units, even though time was limited.

Centraul de Recuperare Si Reabilitare a Persoanelor cu Handicap
Sasca, Romania
Sasca is home to over 400 men and women of all ages, from late teens to the very old. The building where they live and are cared for is old and crumbling. The resources that they have are few and funding locally is minimal.
Mrs Lillie RE Teacher organised a collection to help people in Sasca, Romania. Many thanks to Year 7 and 8 for bringing the spirit of Christmas to a home for Romanian handicapped people. We collected 92 packets of biscuits and 81 Christmas cards, which have now been sent.

Runshaw Enterprise Day
Monday December 14th 2009
Runshaw Enterprise Day was on the 18th of November and eight Business students from Year 10 at Albany went. Unfortunately, all the other pupils from the other schools were year eleven pupils, which meant that we were a bit behind knowledge wise. The people that went were Rakib (myself), Daniel Bolton, Daniel Henshall, Tom Curwood, Ryan Miller, Rebecca Durnan, Samantha Hutchinson and David Hazari.
We started off by looking at business ethics and what we would do in given situations. The situations were: a can opener that could be adapted to break into vending machines and advertising chocolate bars to children. There were multiple choices, such as whether to keep the tin opener on the shelves and whether or not to advertise chocolate in schools. One person from each group then presented the ideas to all the others.
Then, it was making business decisions and calculating profit and loss, as well as doing sales ledgers. In this we had to brand a chocolate bar and a healthy snack bar. For each we would decide how much to spend on advertising and come up with an advertising campaign. A prize was given to the best group, but unfortunately it wasnt any of the Albany students who won.
At lunch, we sat and together and enjoyed huge plates of chips! Overall, it was a fun day for us all and we hope to be using the skills we acquired in our Business Studies lessons.

Race Night and BBQ
Monday December 14th 2009
Friends of Albany hosted a charity race night and BBQ on Friday 18th September, which was sponsored by Martyn Connor and the Co op.
Ian Johnstone, Chair of FOA was compere for the evening, whilst Vice Chair Jackie Connor and Secretary Shirley Walmsley got their aprons on to cook and serve burgers and hotdogs from the BBQ.
Parents, friends and families bought horses and placed their bets and the lucky few celebrated their winnings.
Everyone had a great time and we managed to raise a massive 441.25 which will go towards the minibus fund.
