Why should I study R.E.?
- Because it is interesting. It deals with the big issues that are most important in human life. Religion is all about people- their beliefs and values, their relationships, their dreams and hopes, their fears and failures.
- R.E. will help you to understand what some of the great thinkers and leaders have discovered. It will give you a better understanding of other people, and how the things they believe affect their actions, their values, their lifestyles.
- It will challenge you to think for yourself and develop your skills of understanding and reasoning.
What will I learn?
- All units will enlarge your understanding of religious beliefs and practices and how they affect people's lives. Some units emphasise moral issues; others study a particular religion in depth. You will develop thinking skills.
- R.E. should help you to develop and mature as a person by stimulating you to explore your own beliefs, abilities and self-understanding.
- It should deepen your understanding of other people and what makes them tick.
How will I learn?
- Learning is done through a variety of different methods, like teaching, discussion, visits to places of worship and role play.
- Resources you will use include books, the internet, T.V., magazines and films.
- You will develop reading and writing skills and may share your learning with other students in classroom presentations and displays.
How will I be tested?
There is no coursework. You will do two exams lasting one hour and fifty minutes on each of the topics you have studied.
What can I do with a qualification in R.E.?
- Like any other subject, the simple fact that you have passed is evidence of your ability which will be recognised by employers and universities. Your results will carry points that can be added to the points from other subjects. Employers value the skills that R.E. teaches.
- You can continue to study R.E. for a university degree. Even if you do not, what you have learnt will help you in a wide range of other subjects.
- People with qualifications in R.E. find jobs in an amazing variety of fields, especially in careers that involve dealing with other people. For example, the understanding of ethics, beliefs and culture that R.E. develops can be helpful in any career that involves dealing with people, including medicine, social work, police, personnel management, teaching, catering, and a host of others.
