Our Art schemes of work always ensure the pupils we teach experience a wide range of Art media and materials available at
During Key Stage 3 pupils work in both two and three dimensions in small, medium and large scale. They experience pencil and pencil crayon drawing, working with oil and soft pastels, chalk and charcoal drawing, painting, sculpting with clay work and lino printing. They will learn how to draw from observation, about drawing/painting using their imagination, how to draw a still-life, and how to produce semi-abstract or abstract developments. Pupils study and learn from the work of a vast range of artists throughout Key Stage 3 and also develop an understanding of how Art and Design is used in every day life and the different types of Art related jobs available.
By the end of Key Stage 3 all pupils will have used a wide variety of art materials and methods and will have the knowledge and understanding to help them take GCSE Art should they wish to. For those pupils who choose not to take GCSE Art we feel their lives will have been enriched by the art knowledge they have received.
Currently our pupils are working on the following topics-
Year 7
Pupils are studying the theme of portraits. During this year pupils will produce a detailed self-portrait in pencil, learn about the colour wheel, how to handle paint and produce a large scale semi-abstract self-portrait using chalk and charcoal.
Year 8
Pupils are learning about the methods, materials and processes involved in printing. They will create their own print design based on natural forms and then produce a series of lino prints using over printing techniques. Pupils will print their designs onto paper and also onto canvas bags for life.
Year 9
Pupils are studying in depth the architectural and artistic work of Gaudi. They will learn about manipulating and handling the medium of clay and then develop coil pot designs inspired by the work of Gaudi. Each pupil’s favourite design will be made into a coil pot using clay.
During Key Stage 4, pupils are able to use the knowledge, skills and understanding learnt in lower school to produce the highest quality art work they are capable of. Pupils who choose Art follow the AQA Fine Art syllabus. We also offer Short Course GCSE Art and Design.
For their coursework, pupils complete a number of projects each based on a theme such as Natural Forms. Pupils work in sketchbooks to plan and prepare for their personal responses/final pieces of work. Pupils study the work of other artists to gain ideas and inspiration for their own work, they develop their own ideas and experiment with a range of art materials during the sketchbook process.
In their personal responses/final pieces pupils show off their artistic talents in whatever Fine Art medium is best suited to them. The art course we offer is very structured but allows for pupils to produce very individualistic and personal work that is unique to them.
We are proud of our consistently high GCSE Art results which we feel are not only due to a clearly structured but independent course of study, but are also because of the foundations of art learning gathered during Key Stage 3.
