PE
Physical Education aims to provide an enjoyable, satisfying and balanced programme, with opportunities for all pupils to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The Physical Education Curriculum offers a comprehensive range of experiences to meet the needs of individual pupils and encourage active involvement by all as performers, observers and officials.
Aims
- To develop an understanding of the structure and functions of the body and its basic nutritional and psychological requirements and an appreciation of health, fitness and the benefits of an active lifestyle.
- To develop an awareness of safe participation and the need for rules and regulations through the knowledge, understanding and practice of physical activity in relation to physiological requirements.
- To develop pupils skills of observation and knowledge, to allow for effective planning, evaluating and reviewing.
- To develop the ability to adopt and refine existing skills and develop new skills in a variety of situations.
- To develop co-ordination, mobility and good posture through skill acquisition and an understanding and appreciation of movement.
- To develop pupils confidence and enhance tolerance, appreciation and awareness of ones own and others strengths and weaknesses.
- To encourage responsible behaviour as a team member and individual performer and as a knowledgeable spectator.
- To develop co-operation communication through involvement in sport and be aware of the different social skills necessary in negotiating, leading and being part of a team.
- To develop pupil awareness of what the community has to offer and the important role they have to play in that community.
- To develop an awareness of the career opportunities in the sports and leisure industry available to pupils on leaving school.
- To develop pupils creative and interpretative skills through the appreciation of movement.
- To develop the literary and numeracy skills to be involved in physical education.
- To develop an awareness of the cultural influences on sport and leisure within the community and society.
In Year 10, pupils are given the option of following a two-year GCSE course in Physical Education. This will involve practical and theory work in a number of chosen activities as well as lessons in Anatomy, Physiology, Health/Skill Related Fitness, Methods/Principles of Training, Diet, Health, Hygiene and Sports injuries. All practical work will be assessed internally 30% and by external moderator 30% and will account for 60% of exam mark. The final 40% will be achieved through a written exam paper in Year 11.
The PE Department organise annual visits to Borwick Hall for Year 7 pupils during October and to Tower Wood for Year 9 pupils during November. (14th-18th November 2011) These trips encourage pupils to interact with each other through team building tasks, develop confidence and increase self esteem.
