Albany ICT Department AIMS
The aim of the department is to develop the ICT capability of the pupils. During the ICT lessons the pupils will develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. This will be consolidated by the use of ICT in other areas of the curriculum.
We hope to develop a stimulating environment where pupils will have the opportunity to work in a safe, informed, skilful and creative manner, towards achieving many of the following aims:
- To arouse curiosity, ingenuity and imagination through problem-solving activities
- To develop the ability to communicate ideas and information in a variety of forms
- To develop confidence and have enjoyment with practical problem-solving situations
- To encourage co-operation and a questioning and discriminative attitude
- To develop an appreciation and respect for other people's needs
- To stimulate aesthetic awareness
- To develop an understanding of economics and commercial and industrial production
- To encourage equal opportunities
- To raise awareness of the changing nature of information and communications technology in preparation for society
- To promote quality work
- To identify and solve problems in a purposeful way to satisfy a specific need
- To work safely and be aware of safety matters
- To be able to identify resources needed and constraints imposed by skill, knowledge, resource availability, time and cost
- To gather, order and assess information, generate and record ideas
- To appraise solutions to design problems relative to the initial specification
- To select and develop solutions after consideration of the constraints
- To plan a system, modifying when and if necessary
- To compare and evaluate the performance of a system
- To provide pupils with an understanding of, and skills in, ICT sufficient to meet the demands of the National Curriculum and beyond.

Curriculum Organisation
Years 7 - 9
Year 7 have 1 hour per week.
Years 8 & 9 have 1 hour per week on a rota basis for 2 terms, and are taking the OCR National in ICT.
The scheme of work fully embraces the Key Stage 3 ICT Strategy and fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum and matches the QCA scheme of work.
Years 10 and 11
Year 10 follow OCR National in ICT which is an option subject.
Year 11 all follow OCR National ICT through 1 hour per week.
The curriculum will be reviewed annually in the summer term to ensure that it is still appropriate and relevant. If staff have any comments before that time, they should be raised at departmental meetings.
KS4 : OCR National in ICT Qualification Summary
The OCR Level 2 Nationals in ICT have been developed to recognise learners' skills, knowledge and understanding of Information and Communication Technology functions, environments and operations.
The learners will carry out a range of tasks that have been designed to recognise their achievements in a modern, practical way that is relevant to college and the workplace.
Specification aims
These qualifications specifically aim to:
- Develop learner's knowledge and understanding of the Information and Communication Technology sector
- Develop learner's skills, knowledge and understanding in contexts that are directly relevant to employment situations, thereby enhancing their employability within the Information and Communication Technology sector
- Develop learner's ability to work autonomously and effectively in an Information and Communication Technology context
- Enable learners to develop knowledge and understanding in specialist areas of Information and Communication Technology, and demonstrate the skills needed to participate in the operation and development of ICT specific or ICT non-specific business organisations
- Encourage progression by assisting in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding that learners will need to access further or higher education programmes or occupational training on a full-time or part-time basis
- Encourage progression by assisting in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding that learners will need to enter employment or enhance their current employment status
- Promote interaction between employers, centres and learners by relating teaching and assessment to real organisations.
- The skills being taught also relate to the functional skills qualifications that will become part of the new 14-19 curriculum
All units are centre-assessed and externally moderated by OCR. There are no timetabled exams for this qualification; candidates may complete units at a time that suits the centre. The full award and units from this qualification are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction.
